Hi! I'm Kimberly. I am your course facilitator. I have working in education for more than 20 years. I began in childcare, moved to instructional assistant in K-12 classrooms, then finally became a classroom teacher. I even worked in afterschool programs. My experience and background with social-emotional learning stems from a my experience with troubled youth. I watched as the lead teachers and other adults "handled" and disciplined students in their classrooms. As a paraprofessional, there were times when I withnessed incidents outside the classroom that the teacher did not. The way some of these situations were handled did not sit well with me. Many adults operate as authoritarians and consider children as something to control. I disagree.
My philosophy on social-emotional learning in schools is based on the basic rules of humanity. I treat children with the same respect I expect in return. I acknowledge their feelings and give them space to express their thoughts.I listen and learn from them almost as much as they learn from me.
I'm happy to discuss SEL further and answer any questions you may have.
